Another thank-you

[edit]

Hello James -- I'm overdue to extend another thank-you for your uploads, all so tidily displayed on your user page. As I mentioned previously, I'm continually on the hunt for candidate images to work on, and your contributions continue to serve very well. Because so many of your unique finds are taken from videos, which typically have less resolution than digital stills, they often can benefit from some photo editing (within reason) and I do like to edit photos. Your innovative sourcing and hard work have resulted in the addition of images to many previously unillustrated articles about noteworthy people. Great work and, again, my heartiest thanks! -- WikiPedant (talk) 02:54, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello James -- Regarding this photo, the Commons caption says it was taken in 2016 on the set of the French-language film ''Apres coup'', but you captioned it as from the film ''Afterwards'' (2008). Bussieres was in both films, and I can't tell from the image whether she looks 40 or 48 (although I'm leaning toward 48, which would match the ''Apres coup'' date). What do you think? -- WikiPedant (talk) 06:38, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed well spotted, it is entirely down to the second film not being on her filmography, that is what threw me. Feel free to rectify my error, or I will later today.James Kevin McMahon (talk) 06:55, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes, now I get it. ''Apres coup'' was given the English name ''Afterwards'' as well. So she was in 2 films with the same English name! I have tried to clear this up in the filmography in her article. (I was not expecting you to reply so quickly, but I believe you are on the right side of the pond. Here in Canada, it's now after 3am, but I am a night person.) -- WikiPedant (talk) 07:19, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello James -- I'm curious. Why the removal of this one from your user page? The image itself struck me as OK. Was there a copyright issue here or something? Best regards. -- WikiPedant (talk) 19:35, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wikipedant.. see the conversation below, I thought best to leave this one...

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:James_Kevin_McMahon at the bottom of my Talk page (Wikipedia) Your edit to Nathalie Armin A user has reverted your edit to Nathalie Armin, claiming that the image is a "violation of copyright". AFAICS it's OK, as CC-BY-3.0 on Commons. Does he/she have a point?--AntientNestor (talk) 08:09, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AntientNestor, RupertPJ55 could be Rupert Penry-Jones the actor, he may know Nathalie Armin, so could be a genuine request from her to remove the image, which I believe would be within her rights to do so. The copyright is ShaLT Projects, they have licensed the video under CC-BY-3.0, so that appears to be ok. I have removed the image from my profile to protect the other 500. Thank you for informing me.James Kevin McMahon (talk) 09:22, 24 August 2024 (UTC)

Good guess: according to IMDB Armin and RP-J have appeared in some productions together. AntientNestor (talk) 14:39, 24 August 2024 (UTC)

I sent you an email message

[edit]

Hello James -- I have sent you a detailed email message outlining the steps for and advantages of adding your valuable images to Wikidata. If you aren't inclined to do this, that's fine. But I suspect you might appreciate the advantages. Best regards -- WikiPedant (talk) 18:32, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiPedant, Many thanks for your email, indeed I will give this a try. I always find it incredibly satisfying to see these images going global, but did not know how to use Wikidata. Now hopefully I can. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 21:53, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, you caught on fast. Here's a little more information: Go to File:Charlie Appleby in 2022.jpg and from there to the pages where it is used in (1) the French and (2) Japanese wikipedias.
(1) In the French wikipedia, click on "View history" and look at what I did. The image did automatically propagate to this Wikipedia, but it wasn't set up to automatically create a caption. So I added 2 lines to the "Infobox Biographie2" template to manually add the picture and a caption.
(2) In the Japanese wikipedia, there is no template in this article (sometimes there is/sometimes not) and there was no automatic propagation, so I added the picture and caption using [[File:Charlie Appleby in 2022.jpg|thumb|Charlie Appleby (2022)]]. This English syntax works in any language I've tried so far.
Sometimes, in some wikipedias, when the image automatically propagates, it uses the "Point in time" qualifier to also automatically create a caption. (The Spanish and Swedish wikipedias sometimes do this.)
In some wikipedias there is already an Infobox-style template, but nothing propagates anyway and sometimes the lines for photo and caption were not even included by whoever added the template. So you have to manually add those lines. In the Italian Wikipedia, for example, you can do this by adding "Immagine = photoname.jpg" and "Didascalia = caption text". You can see an Italian example by clicking on it in File:Joseph Mawle in Shell 2012.jpg and looking at the source. -- WikiPedant (talk) 06:44, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I found your instructions very easy to follow, thank you. This looks a little more complicated, but I am happy to learn more. By the way, the American video spelt Appleby as Appelby. I never noticed until it was uploaded, went back, changed what I could but not the actual file name. If I struggle, I will let you know. Many thanks. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 12:36, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, James, I renamed the Commons file as File:Charlie Appleby in 2022.jpg and fixed the incorrect spellings I created in templates and captions in foreign language wikipedias. Everything should be right now. I should have spotted this myself. Glad you did. Thanks for the heads-up. -- WikiPedant (talk) 19:38, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have mastered that now, editing non-English Wikipedia's, successfully with Leanne Cope. many thanks for your guidance. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 15:30, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, really excellent. Here's what I do to keep it really simple with foreign captions: "in" becomes "nel" (Italian), "im Jahr" (German), "en" (French and Spanish). So "Guy Fawkes in 2024" would be "Guy Fawkes nel 2024" (it), "Guy Fawkes im Jahr 2024" (german), "Guy Fawkes en 2024" (fr and sp). For pretty much any other language I just use "Guy Fawkes (2024)". Simple, yet tasteful. -- WikiPedant (talk) 23:56, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I never realised how much work you were doing on each image, that is a lot of time we have spent between us preparing these images. we must be crazy. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 01:27, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Crazy? Oh, not me, partner. I'm in it for all that money they're paying us. -- WikiPedant (talk) 03:50, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you do get paid, you deserve it! It would be great if we got paid by the byte, I'd be a rich man. Be interesting to see contributions in current bytes contributed rather than edits. My payment is seeing those diamonds shine, after they have been polished and displayed to the world. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 17:37, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Captions in French Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello James -- One more tip: In the French Wikipedia, if a person's article has a template, the Wikidata image usually seems to propagate automatically to the article, but I find that the French templates (unlike, say, the Spanish ones) do not seem to be coded to automatically create a caption using the subject's name and the Wikidata "Point in Time". You can deal with this manually by adding a French caption in Wikidata. To do this, click "edit" for the image and then "add qualifier" and, in addition to the "Point in Time", also add a "Media Legend" qualifier in French. Then type "fr" in the "Language" box which will appear. Then click "Publish". The "Media Legend" should then appear as a caption below the image in the French Wikipedia.

You can see an example where I did this for the Wikidata image you just added: File:Andy Timo 2024.jpg. As always -- WikiPedant (talk) 05:12, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki thank you, I will check for this next time. James Kevin McMahon (talk) 08:48, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
